A dispute over how much the state was obligated to pay former Attorney General Phil Kline's lawyer representing him in a disciplinary hearing has postponed the hearing itself. The Board for the Discipline of Attornies was scheduled to hear Kline's case this coming November..but the Kansas Supreme Court has decided to postpone the matter until next February to allow Kline's new lawyer time to get up to speed on the case. The state's complaint against Kline alleges he allowed subordinats to make misleading statements to state officials as they investigated Kline's office's dealings with two abortion providers. This is the second postpontment in the case. Last April, Kline changed law firms in the matter. In announcing the second postponment, state judicial officials said Kline's former attorney Edward Greim told the Attorney General's office that the amount of money they had previoulsy agreed to was not enough but the AG's office apparently did not agree to pay the new amount and Kline decided to dismiss Greim and hire a new lawyer. Under state law, the AG's office is responsible for paying defendants in civil cases if they performing their jobs as public servants when the alleged offenses occured. Just how much the Kline matter is costing the state is a question the AG's office has been asked to determine by WIBW/KIN news.
